We are in the middle of our gun deer season. Opening day was an absolute memory for me. Was up in the NE Lower penisula. Stayed with a neighbor at his camp and hunted with a friend's son at another.

At 7:30am we saw a decent buck bed down in tall grass, initially with another deer, we never saw her bed. He got up and milled around 2 times and bedded back down within yards of the initial bed. At 9:30 me and 12 yr old Patrick decided to go into stealth mode and stalk the buck. For an ...

I've been able to post quite a bit the last few days as I take a quick break and help some family get through the flu- I'm preparing to make a big push in a few days for some big woods bucks. Anyhow, I thought I would continue with my theme of analyzing big woods buck sign that is different from all the hype, the rubs and scrapes we all love to look at. Believe it or not, I quite often keep track of bucks through their tracks and droppings, rubs and scrapes are a bonus: thought it would be interesting ...

My dad shot a cool buck this morning with his ML in the pouring rain. Had a 3" drop on one side and the other side drop was broke off. He wont score much but a cool deer none the less.

So with all the excitement of his deer I took off for the woods about 100PM. I get in the stand about 1:20. As I am hanging my backpack I hear a limb snap down the ridge from me. I got a arrow knocked real quick and hung my quiver up. I turn around to sit down and see him coming. I grab my release ...

I havehad way too many fires at home being unattented to carry on as I had been for the next 3 weeks. I'll give a story and more photos later when I have more time.

I finally got on a big shooter buck. My dad had told me he had seen him Monday and Tuesday evening in the same place. It was a buck that we know very well, he has been on the farm for 3 years and we believe he is 5 1/2. He is a clean 8 point that would go around 145-150 this year. So tonight I set up on him, and like clockwork he came out right where he had the last two evenings. I instantly knew it was him so I started concentrating on picking a shooting lane. After another client had success, he pulled the stand, which was a "Baby Grand" hang on- VERY large and comfortable. This area is in the "Superior Snow Belt". On the way out, he decided to swing over and cross a tiny ridge that he had never had time to scout before. This particular buck, "Split Ear" has been on my radar for yrs.
Almost didnt go out this morning due to being sick, but glad i did.

was about 9:30 ish seen a doe come up to the fence and jump it into a been field. then i noticed 3 more behind her. they all came out into the field at 40 yrds. so i pick the biggest one and settle my 40 yrd pin on her and let it fly. not sure if she dropped or i shot high but i spine shot her and she dropped right there. I did have to go out there and put another arrow in her.

the one out of velvet looks like he has more mass. his bases are about as big as the other deer in velvet, but then the one in velvet is still growing, but not much.

both look like they wont have much in deductions side to side.

the one in velvet looks like he will have longer tines and he does have longer brows.

Oct. 1 starts bowhunting here.

the blinds are ready, the bows are ready. only thing left is to sharpen the broadheads tomorrow after shooting them one more time.

I will use my bear super mag 48 with a 60-65 cedar and a Wensel woodsman broadhead for the first deer, then it will be my KT-44 with the same arrow broadhead combination.

Well who knows exactly where you will be hanging opening day, this picture shows where I am giving it a whirl first. Where the leaning tree is in the back of the picture, in the middle of the ravine is a major trail crossing with some monster tracks on it. I have high hopes of catching up with one of the bucks I passed last year in this general area

well was a pretty good morning, Had 2 small bucks come with in 20 yds and feed in the been field and had 3 more does come out but was to far out to get a shot.

another buddy saw 2 small bucks and another with a great big body but it was foggy and he couldnt tell if it was a buck or not and 3 does.

and my other buddy just saw one doe and missed her at 15yds said he hit a limb and it shot the arrow straight down.

so there was a total of 12 deer seen. not bad lets hope this evening ...
