Action's first turkey

Post  bow_dad on Sun May 12, 2013 11:07 pm

Wasn't sure I'd be able to get AJ out of bed at 4 two days in a row for turkey hunting. Especially after seeing just one hen each of the last couple times here at home. The home birds just dissapeared, I was frustrated to say the least and I was hoping he wasn't getting to be the same. Turned out I shouldn't have worried about it, he was happy because he saw and red winged black bird and a cardinal in the same morning the last time out.

I made it over to the river after work Saturday in time to see a couple birds and get a general idea of where they would be in the A.M. Then went in with TH after dark and got the blind and decoys set up for the morning. The birds have been chased pretty hard over there for 3 weeks so the blind got put in between three trees with a pretty good size briar patch in front so we had pretty good cover.

They were hammering on the roost this morning. That's an understatment they were going bonkers.... and then they flew down and zip, nothing. Almost four hours later, Action's sitting next to me flinging angry birds and I heard a turkey. The wind was up so I grabbed the box call and gave a few yelps and looking through the woods all the way out to the field I see a red head through the binos. I didn't want to over do it with the calls these birds have heard it all lately like I said. But I figured no one else had probably gobbled at them (thanks Pank) I grabbed the box call slid the band down and gave it a little jake half gobble shake and here comes birds. The three jakes pulled up short and then peeled off when the Tom came in. The tom made his way nice and easy up towards the decoys. I held the shooting stick and Action got behind the gun. When the bird got into range I got the safety off and told him "Don't you put your finger on the trigger until you mean to kill that bird." The way we were sitting I couldn't get behind him to help out at all.
Me: " Can you get on him there?"
Action: "No"
getting really nervous now
Me: " Wait till he comes out from the other side of the briars, when you can get your dot on the aiming spot shoot him."
Action: "OK........BOOM!!!"

25 yards shot and he hit it right where the feathers end and the red begins with a load of 7's from his little 20 ga and flattened it. I've been fortunate enough to take alot of animals over the years but none of them will ever mean as much as that turkey, but I don't have to tell some of you guys that, you already know. 24 lbs 10 3/4 beard and one happy kid. Sorry so long here's some pics and a little aftermath video.

That video cracks me up, telling you where the weapon goes when people have an animal and a weapon in a picture! lol!

Sounds like dad was a little more nervous than action though, he's a natural. cheers
