1st NJ buck

Post  chukbuk on Sat Jul 27, 2013 8:42 am

Hey I know I have yet to tell the details of my move to NJ (the last state I thought I would ever end up in!), but want to get the pics up of my buck to go along with the skull/beetle project!  I would have passed this guy up any other year but the first fall in the new home and first time hunting with a flintlock and 2 years since I have been able to hunt...I was thrilled he gave me the chance.  I got these trailcam pics one week before about 20 yards right of where I shot him!
I had been working on replacing my roof all fall and my ritual was to walk up to my stand on the property in the afternoon about 3:30.  My house is downhill from this view, this is a gap in the hillside with farmland above.  The buck came in at 4:05 off the hill to the left and chased does for a half hour and eventually moved to the field above.  Thought he was gone and I was content to watch the deer milling around the gap, including 5 other small bucks.  It was one of those magical fall days where everything is right and I was just thrilled to be in the tree!
10 minutes of light left and he comes down from the field and runs 2 smaller 8's off a doe and she pulls him right toward my stand.  25 yards and then the cloud of smoke, when it clears, he is laying in his tracks!  If you recall any of my prior hunting adventures you may know I have a tendency to do things the hard way (not on purpose), so this was a wonderful change from the norm for me and this buck will be among my most special hunting memories.  I tanned the hide myself for the first time and when the skull mount is complete, he will me my buck of "many firsts"!!
