It's Been a While! 2013 Western PA Buck!

Post  Godfather on Mon Oct 28, 2013 9:42 pm

To say that I have been in a drought when it comes to killing a buck here in my home state of PA would be an understatement. Finally this morning, thanks to the flip of a coin I was able to put one down! So far this season I really hadn't had that much action so I planned on hunting this morning in one of two new areas of the property that I had found while doing some late morning scouting last week. I was torn to which location to try out so while I was defrosting my windows this morning I decided to flip a coin. If it was heads I would hunt and oak ridge that had a handful of scrapes on it. If tails I was going to hunt the other side of the property on the edge of a heavy bedding thicket. Heads was the flip so off I went up to the ridge. This area is pretty thick but there is a logging road that runs through it so it is easily accessible. I arrived at my tree at 6:15 this morning and slowly made my way up with the climber to bout 18 feet. My biggest concern was not having any shooting lanes cut. Once daylight arrived I was pleasantly surprised that I had quite a few nice openings to pick from. Not long after daylight I had a doe come up the hill and start feeding right in front of me. I had no intentions of shooting her but after about 10 minutes I decided to take the shot. Quartering away at 18 yards I drew, settled the pin and completely whiffed! I think I hit a limb but I have no idea what happened. Now really disgusted with myself I actually thought about getting down and getting out of there. But I decided to stay put and a little before 9AM I caught a glimpse of antler going through the brush. A doe popped out on the logging road and trotted right under the tree. The buck followed her onto the logging road and stopped facing me at 22 yards. He stood there for about a minute and finally headed right towards me. I had actually thought about passing him as his brows are less than impressive, but I quickly changed my mind! He turned broadside at about 8 steps and turned and looked the other way allowing me to draw. I settled the pin and this time the arrow found its mark! He ran right under the tree and turned back into the thicket. I could see that he was hit well and watched him walk out of sight. I gave him about a half hour, and took up the trail. He was down in about 80 yards! I decided to just let him be and went home so Blake could help me "track" him when he was done with school at noon. We got out there soon after, also with the help of my dad, and Blake tracked down his first deer for me. He was so intent on following the blood that he nearly stepped on the buck! The buck is a solid deer for my area. I am figuring that he is a 3.5 year old and about 200 lbs on the hoof! Thanks for taking the time to read my story! Here are a few pics!

Great buck and story and pics !!! Nothing like flipping a coin to make a decision !!!!!! Awesome getting the kids involved also, that just makes it all the better.  Congrats !!
On a side note, I did notice your tag though. Not that I care BUT certain wardens would/could write you a ticket for where the tag is placed. I know quite a few wardens that couldn't write a ticket fast enough !! I know I have been seeing a lot of Pa. pics lately with a tag tied on the mainbeam, when it is supposed to be thru the ear. Yea I know, its stupid, but if the old warden for my area would see these pics, I would guarantee a visit from him, with a ticket in hand. I even tried talking the wardens out of punching a hole in my bears ear because I was getting a full mount done, they clearly said NO !!

The law is "attached to the ear." Nothing says that it must be punched through the ear. I tag attach to both the ear and antler.
