Late Muzzleloader Success!!

Post  impactarcher on Mon Dec 30, 2013 10:57 am

Its been a long season for me but I still had hopes for the late muzzleloader season when the deer are the fairly easy to pattern.  I planted about an acre and half of turnips in late july and despite the drought they came up and did pretty good.   I ran cameras all season long and the future looks bright with many nice up and comers but not a single older deer showed up during the summer or fall.   Around Thanksgiving time I went to the farm to pull my cameras and discovered two pictures of a new buck who looked to be fully mature and his head gear looked pretty nice as well.   I got his picture out in the turnip food plot so I figured there might just be a possibility that he'd stick around into the late season.    Fast forward to last night, my first night in the stand.   It was bitterly cold outside with a temperature of 4 degrees making it ideal for deer movement.   All was quiet until about 4:30 when four does entered the food plot and right behind them was the very buck I had hoped to see!!!!!   I just couldn't believe he showed up well before dark on the first night of my hunt.    He fed for about 5 minutes facing directly toward me giving me no shot and I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest.   Then, he turned and I made a perfect shot and he fell dead where he stood!   I have no idea who this buck is and that just proves that if you have the food the deer will come!

I just noticed as i revisited the post, those rubs in the last picture are higher off the ground than our deer make around here. They look like it anyway, but maybe it's an illusion.

Thanks everyone and Happy Holidays!    Well Barb I measured his spread For the deer contest and it's 19"  cheers   As far as his score goes I really don't plan on measuring him but let's just say I'm pretty sure he's big enough for my wall  Very Happy   His rack is pretty knarly looking though I'd hate to be on the other end of it during a fight!!   I'm guessing he's 5.5 years old based on his big body and the trail cam pic I got of him.   Don't you agree??
