First gobbler

Post  ridgerunner on Sun Apr 27, 2014 3:42 pm

Yesterday was the PA youth gobbler day.  My daughter and I had an awesome morning and she shot her first gobbler.  She chose to hunt the foodplot behind the house.  There wasn't any gobbling from the roost but a little after 6am and a few yelps two sounded off, one on each side of us.  Not long after one was skirting the edge of the plot hard to our left.  We were focused on him as he seemed to hang up.  Then all of a sudden he turns, looks hard and starts running right at us.  I had the camcorder and peaked out a different window of the blind.  To my surprise another gobbler had snuck in quite from behind us and was strutting his way up to the decoy.  She was committed to the one running in and shot.  She must have been a little off balance and the recoil knocked her over in the blind.  I could see she hit him but he was hobbling away on one leg, she got up and fired another one off.  I got out and chased him down.  She's one happy kid!  9" beard and 7/8' spurs.

Thanks everyone!  She really surprised me when she said "I want to use your turkey gun Dad".  She just turned 11 and wants to shoot a 12 gauge.  We practiced with low brass and used 2 3/4" mag 4 shot to hunt, she was fine with it.  We're looking forward to heading back out this Saturday but this time I get to shoot.

Good luck to all those still chasing birds!
