Roosting paid off last night

Post  Mountainman Vic on Mon May 05, 2014 10:49 am

Last night I found this bird on a food plot with 5 hens. I stayed with him for two hours as they did their thing. It was all but dark when he left the food plot and I knew I was going to be in the drivers seat this morning. However I had intended to have my brother shoot this bird. But he is handicapped due to a 5 story fall a few years back. Because of that we weren't able to get back in off the food plot in the dark like I normally would but got in as far as he felt comfortable. after we had set up. I could see a bird sitting in a tree about 50 yards from us and told my brother to turn toward some. But not knowing for sure at that time if it was the gobbler he elected to not turn as far as he should have. At daylight the gobbler sounded off and we knew it was him but now it was too daylight to move. The bird pitched down perfectly and it looked as if he was going to walk right in front of my brother but one of the hens started calling and he turned and started heading away from us and I didn't realize how high the red brush was. He was out of my brothers shooting lane and leaving so when I got his head in the scope I jellied up his head. Sorry about the bird looking so rough. He really took it tough. Very Happy

Rick, Its been pretty good for me. I haven't had any problem getting on birds so far. But I'm sure, like always, there are plenty of people who will tell you that they are all hened up and can't be called in or any of the other excuses they always come up with.

I have seen some birds, but the spots I have checked have a lot less scratching going on than past years.
