Action's second Tom (Updated with video)

Post  bow_dad on Tue May 06, 2014 9:42 pm

Well so far the season has been full of what Action calls "sportsman's" hunts for us,  had a good time and enjoyed the outdoors but not much going on as far as close calls or even working any birds.  He's a trooper though, and as long as we bring him a book or a game he can sit for a long time for a little guy.

And he had to sit quite a while Saturday.  We heard exactly two gobbles off the roost and they were way south.  Luckily we've been running some cameras behind Dad's and saw that a few birds were making there way through in the middle of the day when the hens were on nest, so we sat.

We'd been out there since about 5:30 and finally at 10:45 I got a response to some yelps from my pot call and a little jake half gobble from my box call .  That's all it took and the next thing we know we have birds  coming from north and south gobbling.  Unfortunately the bird coming from the south went past a little out of the range of Action's 20 ga, and he didn't want anything to do with the decoys.  He ended up taking off to the bird from the north and they got into it for a bit then crossed over to the neighbors.  Action says "another sportsman hunt, let's go".  I told him we'd sit for another half hour, and about ten minutes into it Dad says he see's a bird sneaking in quiet on his side of the blin. , Action got his gun on the shooting stick and fallowed the bird right up to the decoys.  If I ever get the video uploaded you can see the rest from there, I'll try to add it when it's done.

Anyway, one happy kid and it was cool to have three generations in the blind when it worked out.  Ended up being a 24 pounder with 1 1/8 spurs and a few hairs on his beard that went about 7 or 8 inches,  he lost quite a bit of it at some point, not sure mites or winter or what.  He was a big bird though, Action says it was a trophy hunt now.

How many times you tell him to shoot?  lol!

Awesome video, love that in all the excitement he still made sure the gun was on safety... that means your doing it right!  Congrats again Action... and Jason I don't see you shooting first again for a LONG long time! Smile

Too funny, Jason, just now got to watch the video,  like  I said  Action is such a hoot,  He is  a natural in front of that camera,       His reaction and  little interview was just  priceless.  That was just so   awesome  and  Thank you for sharing,

Oh man I cringed when I heard myself on the video, but that bird snuck in quiet and it obviously wasn't his first rodeo, I thought for sure he was going to take off before Action could get a shot.  I asked him about it later and he says "I was just getting him lined up for the perfect shot."  Stays cooler than his old man!
