Wihunter24 2014 Bow Buck

Post  wihunter24 on Thu Oct 02, 2014 10:44 pm

I'll try to keep this somewhat short and sweet but it'll probably end up being long and rambling.

All week the weather people were saying rain was coming mid-week and that a big cool down was going to follow as we moved into the weekend.  With the threat / anticipation of rain I worked late on Tuesday night to get things wrapped up / protected as much as I could.  October 1st, dawned foggy with a steady drizzle and more rain on the way, which resulted in me having the day off of work.  A steady rain set in about 8:30 AM and didn't let up until about 3:00 PM.  I debated about going hunting figuring everything was soaking wet and I would be as well once I walked through the CRP / woods etc... and I'd also be eaten alive by mosquitos.  I eventually figured I might as well go since the rain was done and the winds were pretty much non-existant.

I've got a small secluded foodplot of beans with a 15' wide ring of brassicas around the outer edge that's surrounded on 3 sides by woods.  I'd hung stands on the north and south sides of the plot allowing me to hunt it with different winds.  I got set up and organized about 4:30 and by 4:45 I had the first deer in the plot which happened to be a small 5pt.  Pretty soon he was joined by a doe and 2 fawns.  And then a spike.  And then 2 more does.  And then a basket racked 6pt.  This doe tempted me.....

It was a never ending parade of deer.  At 5:50 I looked up and here came another small buck with a nice buck right behind him.  I immediately recognized the buck as one that frequented the cameras all summer. He and one of the little bucks began making scrapes and sparring within 10 yards of my other stand across the plot.  They walk right where you aren't- never fails.  At this point he was a good 75 yards away from me.

Eventually all the deer were out in the beans mowing them down- at one point I had 7 bucks and 6 does out in front of me.  This particular buck made his way from one end of the plot all the way to the other, never getting within 50 yards of me.  He got into a corner of the plot behind me and I lost sight of him for awhile.  Next thing I know, he's walking down the edge of the beans and brassicas at 30 yards.  He stops to make a scrape at 20 yards and is nice enough to turn broadside.  I got to full draw, but the only issue was 1 branch about wrist diameter right in my way.  He eventually turned around and walked out into the middle of the plot again without an arrow being sent his way.  I looked at my watch and it was 6:55, with light beginning to fade pretty quickly.  He was making his way back towards where he originally came from and was at about 55 yards when a doe and 2 fawns popped out of the woods 20 yards from me.  He took one look at them and started walking right at them at a steady pace.  They all scattered in different directions while he kept getting closer and closer to me although I had no shot angle.  He got to 20 and turned to his right once he hit the edge of the beans and brassicas.  A few more steps and he was standing broadside at 15 yards, at the most, in a hole that you could drive a school bus through.  I remember drawing my bow and that's about it.  Next thing I know it sounds like I punched a pumpkin and he took off running 100 mph.  He ran straight across the plot about 60 yards and stopped.  He looked around, flicked his tail and promptly tipped right over! cheers  I'm glad I watched him fall, because there was about 5 drops of blood total in the beans and even the arrow didn't look that great.  I hit him an inch or so forward but got both lungs and the top of the heart- can someone explain the lack of blood to me on a shot like that? scratch

He's not my biggest deer or the biggest I have on camera this year, but he's a mainframe 10 with matching stickers off both G2's, and matching points coming off the inside of the beams near the G3's on both sides for 14pts.  Bottom line..... he looks cool, it was a great hunt, he'll taste great and I'm happy with him.  Now what do until gun season.....?

Awesome buck Zack. That's the buck I figured it was from looking at your trail cam pics.

Congrats Zack, great buck and story to go along with him! cheers

I bet it was a bloody mess when you field dressed him.  It seems if they don't get far enough to start pumping the blood out, it all ends up in their cavity.
