2014 KY buck

Post  Boss Gobbler on Mon Nov 17, 2014 8:48 pm

This is a buck I have known about for a few years. He was very hard to keep up with. I have some deer that live on the farm and never leave. I have a few bucks that will spend 90% of their time from December to October on about 50 acres. They have really small home ranges. Obviously everything changes in November.  This buck however would roam for miles all year long. I rarely got pics of him and I had gotten pics of him on every end of the farm. I had never saw this deer in person until I shot him. The first time he was on my radar was 2012. I figured he was a 2 1/2 that year.

2013 I was happy with the jump he made but thought he would have done a little better. I was guessing him at 3 1/2 probably 140ish"

Going into 2014 at 4 1/2 I wanted to see this deer and honestly expected him to jump to at least the mid to high 150s. I only got a few very scattered blurry pics of him, but thought he looked good. I decided that since he roamed so much, if I ever got the chance at him I would take it.

I really have set up a sweet spot for hunting the rut. It took several years of tweeking and work but its perfect now. Basically it is a "Y" shaped funnel and does bed at the 2 top ends of the "Y" . It is thick nasty cover and cedars, I cut a path through the cedars about 10 yards wide about 100 yards back from the fork in the "Y". Bucks will cruise back and forth checking does all day long.  Well Sunday I had one of those special days. I had a hot doe go through to bed and it didnt take long for the bucks to find her. I had 11 different bucks harass her. I got to see a lot of different deer some which I had never seen before. Its what we all dream about, but it was stressful as could be. I had bucks running back and forth grunting, scraping and fighting. Some of the bucks I instantly recognized others I had to look over real hard. It can get confusing and if you arent careful you can shoot the wrong deer. I finally decided I was just going to wait for a no doubter, one when you see it you say yep he will work. At 11 am he stepped out. I saw him about 200 yards off and could see at least 4 long tines. I got the scope on him  and he started walking straight at me. Then he turn to go into the woods, a second later he went to step into an opening where I could shoot. As soon as he got to where I needed one more step he froze and looked right at me. Remember I am probably 150 yards away. He then turns and disappears into the woods. Well about 10 minutes goes by and I catch out of the corner of my eye a buck coming from the opposite direction crossing my narrow lane. I saw nice long tines, grunted 3 times and barely got him stopped. I took the shot, he mule kicked and ran off. Immediately I panic thinking I may have shot the wrong 10 point. I had seen 2 other young 10 points. How could he have possibly gotten by me and then came back from the other direction? Its crazy how many decisions you have to make in a second or less, so I could have easily made a mistake. Luckily after a 40 yard track job I was relieved and had shot the right one. It was the roaming 10 point I never expected to see. I was kinda surprised that he didnt make the jump I expected him to this year, but I was more than happy with him.

Awesome buck Boss, congrats!  Always a bonus to get one of those roaming bucks, there is always such risk of him getting taken elsewhere. Nice job, great deer!
