Kansas 2014

Post  Willy on Wed Nov 19, 2014 4:00 pm

Just got back from Colorado. No elk. It was crazy weather. Warm and sunny the day we got there then the day season started it was a white out and stayed that way till we decided to pack it in. Didn't see a whole bunch as the weather had the critters hold up under a tree somewhere I guess but it was fun non the less.
Kansas was on fire this year. We hit it just right. The big boys were on there feet and cruising. Not a whole lot of hard chasing, just a lot of daylight traveling.
I went in after that big nine that I had been watching all summer, but we had a slight issue with cattle, a little miscommunication, I had to fall back on plan b, dummy buck. He lived up to his name on the second afternoon in on him.  I got some great video clips of him on the Covert chasing hard and some of him doing battle with a brand new 10 point I had never seen before. I fine tuned a stand after getting the video clips of him, luck was on my side as the stand I moved he ended up coming in just perfect. He cleared a fence and hit the wheat field and instead of continuing on into the field like all the rest of the deer. He jumped the fence, turned and faced me head on, took about four steps closer to me and stood like a rock facing me head on for at least 10 minutes. The whole time lip curling and just watching the other deer on the wheat. Finally a smaller buck cut in after a doe and he shifted his body opening up his shoulder and I took the 27 yard shot. It was text book. He bolted about 30 yards, stopped and stood there looking back at where he was  and then it was like he had concrete on his feet, he barley made it to the edge of the field before going down.

cell phone picture of where he cleared the fence into the wheat he was at 43 yards and a bad angle here

recovered my arrow pretty fast, I love nocturnal Noks, Where have we seen this before ????

Brady scored on a super old buck. I have sheds off this guy for three years running. he is at least 8. He had disappeared last year and I thought he had been killed of just died.  The day after I shot my buck I was out trying to get a doe and I had a really nice 8 point come in on me. I decided not to shoot a doe and instead put Brady in the stand the next day hoping he would get a crack at the buck I saw. As it turned out the buck I saw didn't show up, but our old friend did and Brady made a perfect double lung shot and we recovered the buck inside of 100 yards.

this is the buck I saw the day after I tagged out and thought I was putting Brady on, this guy put on quite the show for me that morning

This is the Big 9 that was my number 1, this is as close as I got to him, about 800 yards. I hope he makes it through rifle

It was another great week in heaven.  Over way to fast.  Cant wait till next year.

Awesome pics, awesome deer.  Congrats to you guys.  Too bad Colorado didn't give up any elk steaks but it's still a great place to be.

Glad he lived up to his name for you, although you may be downplaying the amount of work you did to make him appear dumb!  I'd gladly settle for a buck like that as my plan B!!!
