First wolf in awhile and its a giant

Post  TheCReW on Sun Feb 22, 2015 4:55 pm

The wolves haven't been around at all this year which has been nice, but we finally got one of the trail camera right by the house, its about half a mile west of us.  The good news is he was by himself, and this time of year they are usually packed up so there must not be many around. They really took a beating last year, with mange, distemper, low prey pops and really tough conditions all hitting at once.  It is definitely a big male. Huge head and real heavy in the front end. I would love to catch him out in the open one of these days and put him on the wall....

Chad, Can you or do you trap for them? I'd love to be able to take one.

Yup, he looks healthy!  Good pic of him, I can't imagine sharing the hunting woods with wolves!  Thought I caught a glimpse of a red wolf last week while camping in the Smokies.  They had been reintroduced to the region years ago but I later learned that they interbred with coyotes and numbers dwindled.  More likely I saw a big coyote with a little wolf genetics.  It definitely had the look of a wolf, who knows!

Beautiful animal on the outside that's for sure! Glad to hear your numbers are down this year.

Hi Vic, Yes we can trap for them on private land only. The problem is they spend 95% of their time deep in the forest and only come out once in awhile. I am going to try for this one if I can find some bait asap and setup a spot. They are really tough to catch, and very trap wary after they get a bit older. I usually have pretty good luck catching one but that seems to be it, then just get a steady stream of yotes.
