Soggy morning gobbler

Post  Mountainman Vic on Sat May 16, 2015 11:56 am

I have been crazy busy with work the past few weeks and trying to slip in a little hunting when I can. After my miss the first day of the season, I have been struggling to get on birds to where I can get shooting at them. Well last evening I went out and was able to roost four long beards. Two of which waited until right before dark to leave the food plot. I figured they were going to be right there this morning and with the rains overnight they would be sure to head right to the fields. Well I got up at I headed in to the plot at around 4:30 while it was raining pretty good. I normally like to get in earlier but I new the rain would give me a little extra time. I set up my tree umbrella and set through some heavy showers while I waited on daylight. As daylight made its way through the timber, I could tell the sky was clearing. It wasn't long and I could hear the birds fly down. I had to slip around the tree to peak up over a mound of ground between me and the food plot and there they were. Less than 40 yards from me, working their way into the plot. I saw the one on the right had the best beard so I let him have it. And something I haven't had time to post about yet. I have never been able to get my gun to pattern very good. Well after missing that bird on opening day, I bought Winchester's Long Beard XR shells with the Carlton Choke that was designed with them and WOW! What a difference. The pattern I get with these new shells at 50 yards is better that what I was getting at 40 with anything else I tried. At 20 yards they will completely take the head off a bird. And they ar only $23 for 10 , Where I was paying $30 plus for 5 of the old shells.

Here's a pic of the pattern I got at 50 yards. I counted 143 5 shot bb's in an 8x11 square

And 20 yards blew a 1 1/2" hole in the plywood.
