Youth Day 2015

Post  VABuckSlayer on Mon Sep 28, 2015 7:15 am

I had a 2 day tournament this past weekend and Saturday I left as quick as I could after weigh in to get back home and take Jake hunting behind the house. We got set up in our ground blind around 5:00. Had a fawn come out to our right about 250 yards away about 5 minutes later. About 15 minutes later a spike came out in front of us. Jake was using my Remington 1100 with a scoped slug barrel. I sighted it in a few days before and it was money. The spike fed in the watermelon patch and got to 91 yards. I told Jake to center the crosshairs on his shoulder and squeeze. He takes the shot and missed. The buck ran back in the woods and Jake was really upset that he missed. I told him that we still had a couple hours and that he will probably come back. Well a half hour later he does come back. He gets to about the same spot where Jake missed and he gets spooky and heads back to the woods. Jake thinks its over again but we still have an hour of daylight. About 20 minutes later a fawn comes out, then the spike, then another fawn, then 2 big does. The spike gets to 100 yards and he's slightly quartering to us. I told Jake to put it on the crease behind the shoulder this time. He takes the shot and this time the slug hits it's mark. The buck made it back to the tree line and I was pretty sure I saw him go down just inside the woods. We hugged and high fived and it was a pretty awesome moment. We knew the deer was hit good. We went back to the house to give him some time and changed clothes. He got his 20 gauge to go look for it just in case. As we got close to the tree line Jake saw his white belly about 10 yards into the woods. Jake had his first buck! I could not be more proud of him! He went from tear of disappointment with the miss to tears of happiness with the kill. A really awesome hunt that we will remember forever!

Way to  go  Jake,!!!!!!!

So happy  for  him Eric, He is   quite the   little  trooper, he has  already   felt many of  the high's and low's    that  come with hunting  , at his young age,  I know there was  time you worried if he would stay interested in the sport,   Look's like   you got  a  hunting  partner for life  now , Very Happy

Congrat's to Jake on his  first buck, and   thumb's up to  you  also, Pappy Wink

Thanks everyone! If your wondering, the gun in the picture is his Rem 870 20 ga pump. We took that for the recovery in case he needed to make a follow up shot in the woods but that was not necessary!
