Decisions, Decisions
Season is over and I want to get started mounting my two bucks but I'm having the toughest time figuring out what forms and poses I want to use. The one big 8 I got has a HUGE 26" neck while the big 9 has a 22" neck. I really want to do something out of the ordinary but every time I think I get it figured out I change my mind. I really like the Last Chance manikin, the one Jimmy got his drop tine buck mounted on and a few others too but still can't make up my mind. Then I thought about doing an open mouth mount, but then again maybe not. I'll tell you what I'm getting to be as bad as a women in making my mind up.
If that wasn't bad enough, the buck I shot last year Sir Crab Claw I'm thinking of remounting him too cause I hate the form I choose. Decisions, Decisons................ STEVE

Are you kidding Steve??? I love your crabclaw mount!!

Don't do an open mouth on your beautiful buck's- -
I think they look goofy
- you did ask didn't you?

I hear ya on the decisions Steve...I have spent many days pouring through Mckenzie books trying to get an idea for what form I want to use. Only suggestion I have is on you deer with the 26" neck, I have one like that and used a semi upright offset shoulder and man it came out great! It really shows off the next size of that deer.

In years past I have used only the Joe Meder line of forms and they are nice but unfortunatley he doesn't have a form big enough for my monster 8!! No sheet!!!!!
Barb, I know what you mean about the open mouth look BUT I need to sharpen my talents and that would take my mounts to the next level.
I guess I'm just tired of the same look year after year. I want everyone who see's these mounts to go WOW!!!!

I wish I some tough decisions like this to make!
I'm sure whatever you decide they will turn out great. I kind of agree with Barb, I don't like the look of an open mouth. And if I remember correctly I thought Crab Claw turned out awesome. Good luck with your decision.

Steve I here you. I was doing the same thing with mine. I finally decided that what really sets the mounts off is a habitat scene. I'm going to try one of the new wall habitat scenes from McKenzie. It might not be your thing but its somthing to make the mount a little different. On your big eight though. You need to show that neck.

Steve,
This is a pretty good size bodied deer. Do you already have one mounted like this?

Re: Decisions, Decisions
I turned my selections over to a woman Steve, SOME of them really do have a better eye for the stuff. My Taxis wife has narrowed mine down for me the last 5 or 6 I have had done. She can look at the rack and tell wich way it should be turned or not turned to show off the rack.
How high on your wall will the mount go? I have been using Dan Chase forms for a few years, its not the standard form that my guy uses but when I killed my monster bodied 8 in 07 we had a hard time finding forms to fit the neck and Dan Chase had one in the style I wanted.
If I had higher ceilings in my room, Im confined to a finished basement, if I had high ceilings I would like to do a looking down (4300 series) that Chase has, I think that would look great in a room with vaulted ceilings.
Good luck, let us know what you do

I'll have to agree with Barb. Don't do an open mouth mount. However, the last chance mount is a good one. Another one could be in some form of a sneak.

Re: Decisions, Decisions
I've narrowed it down to four different poses.
The first is a Coombs semi-sneak and this form would really show off the huge neck on the 8pt.

The second is Jimmy's buck, mounted on a Last Chance manikin. This one might be good on my big 9 because I had multiple chances at that buck and finally got it done.......hence the Last Chance.

My third choice is a Coombs 9500 wall pedistal with a nice sharp turn. I really like this one! Before and after:

And last but not least is a Coombs upright. A basic form but I think it looks majestic and shows off the neck good. I can invision this one mounted to an old wooden fence post with barb wire??

What ya'll think?

Go with the upright Steve, nothing shows off a rack better than the upright IMO. I'm a big fan of uprights or wall pedestals so either one would be cool.
Another idea would be to mount them both on a big base. One as a semi sneak in front of the other in the back being a big upright. My taxi did one like that a few years ago on a grass habitat and it turned out awesome!!!!

I agree with PJ, for a deer with a huge neck I like the upright forms, it shows them of really well.

That sharp turn pedestal is sweet. The old standard upright can get a bit "old". I told my taxi to get crazy with mine,..new and different is sometimes a good thing.
