How many deer per sq mile in your area

Post  Aero on Tue Sep 07, 2010 4:19 pm

The MN DNR published this map of deer/sq mile. I thought it was interesting since the DNR and media want everyone to believer there is an overpopulation of deer.

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/outdoor_activities/hunting/deer/deer_density_prefawn_2009.pdf

I'm curious to know if other states do the same? I hunt in the 1-10 deer per sq mile... and its not near the 10 LOL! Whoo hoo!

No idea, I've never seen anything like this from IL. It'd be interesting to see though that's for sure.

you can google 'qdma deer density map' and pull up a nationwide map that has counties color coded into densities.

For Huron County in Michigan- Where I hunt the deer population in 2005 was at about 28 deer/Mile. The goal the DNR set for 2006 - 2010 was to get it down to 18 - 20 per square mile. Not sure where we are at with the goal.

I haven't looked at the map yet but if you go by the numbers on my drive tonight there are exactly four...

Yeah PA does that. I'll tell you how they say they know how many deer there are per square mile here. They have a group of people walk through the woods that they have graphed. They count the deer turds and with some magical calculation they know how many deer there are in an area. Rolling Eyes Honest. Thats the truth! Now I'm pissed off before bed. Thanks alot!

Vic, you forgot about the annual plane ride or as they call it, a survey !! Yes Pa. does a survey from the air and that sets some areas deer density. Only problem is the deer are herded up cause its winter !!
I would say our area is around 12-15, but that is farm country. We walked about 15 miles during bear season 2 years ago up around Vics and saw maybe 5 deer total !! No we were not driving, we were walking nice and slow and being as quiet as we could.

the map soil posted said 30-45. I'd say that about right. Closer to the 30 side of things. If there were 30/sq mile there would be 10 fawns, 12 does, 8 buck, and 6 of those bucks would be 2 or 1.5. Crying or Very sad

That is interesting. The county that I hunt says 30-45; not sure on the accuracy though.

We could count up to 125 in square mile in the Pike area on nightly drives - that and 75 deer in just a 2 ac. foodplot , of course that was before All the outfitting started
I think these survey's are a joke to be honest
