Shed Traps
Has anyone ever made any shed traps? I am going to make one this year and try to get some antlers. So, if you have made one, give me some pics and tips on how to make one. I have seen a few on youtube and they look pretty cool!

Re: Shed Traps
from discussions i've heard and read about them, they don't work as well or as often as you would think. you're going to find many more sheds by walking the woods than by looking into shed traps.

I have to Totally agree with Soil- Kyle
that and many others that have actually used shed traps over the years- you might get a few- but if you really want to learn something about their natural shedding and what area's they are in at the time- Put the leg work in

Re: Shed Traps
I've always been interested in seeing how one works... I've heard of some trying them but here in IL its illegal to use a bait pile so that would make a trap difficult. I've heard of people using T Post and fencing like that orange construction fence and they just put it at "V" with the bait at the back side. If you have a bunch of food available for them it probably won’t be nearly as effective as it would when food is scarce. I would try it if it was legal.
Are you going to try it for sure Kyle?

I've always wondered about these myself. In my opinion if they really worked then there would be a lot more people that use them. I have to agree though, it would kind of take the fun out of it for me. I like getting out there and putting a little leg work in. The few sheds that I have found are some of my most prized possessions!

I am going to build 1 shed trap down in the fooodplot. But, i will still do all the leg work that me and Dad have always done. I just love getting out there and enjoying the outdoors at all chances i can get. I will tell u guys if it worked and i will post pics of the trap and if i get any sheds.

Re: Shed Traps
Best shed trap I have ever built is, take 3 cattle panels, and some post, make a big triangle and pour corn in the middle. When they jump back and forth over the panels, if their ready to shed, the horns pop off and will be laying right there.
I usually average 2-3 sheds a year doing that. I'm feeding them anyways and running camera's there to know when certain bucks shed out, so don't go into it thinking your going to gather a bunch of them up.

Re: Shed Traps
the protein feeders we use are a shed trap of sorts. If they get low, the bucks will bang the tubes o them with thier heads, I find a few every year under them. they leave some pretty good gouges in the feeders they hit them so hard. If I could figure a way to get them to all drop in a pile or all drop in a certain feild i would do it. I personally dont like walking in thier bedrooms no matter what time of year it is. I do it, but I dont make multiple walks in areas. I wait till I think at least 95% of the bucks have shed. Use cameras at food sources to tell me when its time. Then I will make one hard search in each area and thats it. A big buck that has shed is still a big buck, and dispite what some might think , they really cant tell when your trying to shoot them or when your just looking for thier drops. you only get so many chances at them. I guess its different where they have to deal with human intrusion all the time or where no matter where they go they will get human intrusion, but in my world they have miles of country they can go and there are places that a human on foot is not a common occurence. I have seen guys use chicken wire and post to make something similar to what Brian was talking about, but they didnt loose them by jumping but when they would go in to get the feed at the narrow point and theier racks would hang in the wire. I know a guy who used a truck bed net to make a deal over a creep feeder opening so the deer had to stick thier heads under the net to get at the creep and they would hang in the net.
Good luck with the trap, take some pictures.

My thoughts exactly. While I would like to have more, the few that I do have I am proud of.
