coopers hawk attacks bird

Post  guardian on Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:16 pm

i was sitting in a ground blind over looking my feeder, bow hunting this weekend (things were real slow deer wise)watching small birds eat my corn when all of a sudden out of no where a hawk flew down and flushed the birds and the hawk grabbed one of the birds out of mid air.it happened so fast i wasnt sure what happened .the hawk landed by the feeder and had supper.i watched him eat and after the hunt went to where the dinner table was to see what was left and to my suprise there was nothing left but a few feathers.i told my brother this and he said it was a coopers hawk and they leave nothing to spare and when they are done they regurgitate the bones kind a sick but amazing none the less

Unfortunately, they prowl our bird feeder area. We've watched them take way too many of our birds. Evil or Very Mad

I see it everyday, be it a copper or what we call our redtail/redwinged hawks-
It is very common for us to see at least 10 hawks a day lurking in the tree tops , in the yard- and putting the hurt on all the small game -quail , rabbits,
doves and even the song birds ,
I still do not understand why they are protected in our state- they pay us in our CRP programs to create a better habitat for small game and then protect one their biggest preditors confused
The last few years , I have taken note's on the increasing numbers of the different varities of hawks in our area- and I would love to see the state allow us at least one year to take a few out,
And Yes, without a doubt , it is truly amazing to watch, All of god's creatures do what they have to do to survive, but when I have had talks with a local biogolist and they ask me about the numbers , I see in small game birds, and what I get to ecnounter every day- with more and more hawk sighting's, still nothing gets done
But they are still , concerned about the decreasing quail numbers-in many areas

when i volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center, i got to work around one. i even got to put him up on a glove and walk out side with him all the time. it was AWESOME!! they are such cool birds. they can swoop down and dive at over 200mph+
that one had hit a powerline and taken off one of his wings in full stoop comin down after a rabbit. he cant be released back into the wild, so he is a show and tell bird Wink

I must say, I can see up to ten hawks on one 45 min drive a day if the weather is decent. I love seeing them though. They are so neat to watch because you can just tell they are always on the prowl the way they move around and scope things out. I never saw them growing up. I don't even think I knew what it was the first time I saw one. PJ told me. I know they are not the nicest and I wouldn't mind if they were hunted... but I do enjoy seeing them!
