How many trail cams do you put out?

Post  Boneheadz on Sat Jul 23, 2011 7:16 am

This is something I'm weak on. I've noticed alot of you seem to know your stuff when it comes to trail cams. How many do you put out vs. Amount of land you hunt?

Its an addiction for me. I think it is something that really depends on where your hunting. I run more this time of year than I do say after October. I run as many as I have active food sources. In a good wet summer or normal summer that can be as many as 10 or in years like this one as few as 4 or 5. I dont like to run mine where the deer are bedding or even on the major trails to thier bedding areas this time of year. Deer in the summer for the most part are finding thier major food sources man made. Crop feilds, or like line since there are no crops this year, the feeders we have. They are expect to smell human smells around those sources. So camera set up and being checked during daylight are going to do very little in the way of spooking deer. walking in the woods to put a camera up on a trail through some brush this time of year, unless your practicing some good scent control, you may get some pictures but I think your also making the deer aware that somethings up. Once they come off the summer paterns and start wandering more and moving more in daylight I will put a few on good buck sign or heavy trails.

I usually have a half dozen or so out at a time. I'm not going to say how many I've got all together because the wife reads this sometimes....

I was just reading an article in Bowhunting magazine about doing a trail cam census to find the total number of deer, age, sex, ect... that recomended one quality cam for every 80 acres to do a "properly conducted trail cam census".

We try to run one at every good food and water sorce on our land. You cover food and water and you will have a good Idea as to what is running around on your place before season. Come season it all comes down to scrapes and water for us. That is when you are going to get pictures of deer passing thru. At that time you have to check camera's every chance you get to maybe get a chance at that deer that might only show once a season. If we get a picture of a big deer in a area one season and he is never see again that season you can bet I will be setting that area that same week next season. We run around 30 cameras min. from Sep. till Feb. on our place

I hunt on 700 acres here in IL and currently only have once camera out. I will probably be putting a couple more out next weekend and wish I had another 5 or so to dispurse around the farm but I need to buy some more.

i run 5 for the better part of the year. if i had 5 more i'd run ten. if i had ten more i'd run 15 Surprised i don't have one big block to hunt, but rather several spots of 40 acres or less. also lots of fencerows connecting timber sections that are perfect spots for cams over scrapes.

As of now , I will have 8 out on 140 acres( new one came yesterday, Wink No where near enough, And I know first hand no matter how many you , have , they will not show you everything that roams your ground,
Right now mostly set up on food plots and water sources and the yard,, As we can not put out mineral or run feeders,
Come Oct, I can not wait to get them set up on scrape lines and travel core's in the timber

I currently own five, and after I get my fifth one out later today, I will be running all five. I probably have about one per 80 acres right now. However, I do want more to cover more ground that I can hunt.

Like Willy first said, I like to focus mainly on food this time of year and avoid going too much into the woods at all. I currently have one camera in the woods, and even that one is only 30 yards in from a bean field. I have mineral site there just to see how early they stage on the edges before actually showing themselves in the fields.

Once seaon rolls around I'll begin to move into the woods more but I am quite carefull about doing so.

We have 16 and have them all out now. We still havent quite mastered early season camming, still have a lot to learn. Once October rolls around, the pics will start coming in heavy.

I've got 10 cameras on 310 acres. Of those 10, usually 8 or 9 or are actually functioning... Evil or Very Mad

I'll be using 3 this fall. I don't usually have very much luck with them until they start hitting the scrapes in early October. That is always when I get my best pics.
