Hunter's first buck....

Post  WTLHAVEN on Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:59 am

Saturday morning started off a little rocky for us, but it soon panned out to be one awesome day. This was Hunter’s first year to tag along during the gun season with Tristan and myself. I’m not sure who was excited more, him or me. We got to the property and headed off on our nearly half mile walk. Half way there we dropped Tristan off to where he would sit for the morning’s hunt. We got him all situated and then me and Hunter took off for our spot. We sat most of the morning only seeing 3 button bucks. Hunter had his mind made up that he wanted to kill a buck. I was really hoping it would happen for him to make up for his loss on the youth hunt. The second morning of the youth hunt he took a shot at a big doe with his muzzy, but we couldn’t find any hair or blood anywhere. After going back and looking down the “shot path”, I noticed a branch with a nick out of it. Well after looking for an hour and a half and seeing where the bullet hit that branch we chalked it up as a miss. It wasn’t until 2 days later that I learned differently when Tristan and I found her about 200 yards away with a high and back hole in her. I was absolutely sick about it and when I told him he was pretty upset. So, him getting a deer Saturday morning would have been a great thing. Well, about 10:00 Tristan calls me to tell me that a deer that he was wanting to shoot just walked out in front of him. I’m sitting there as he’s telling me this thinking “WHY AREN’T YOU SHOOTING???”, and then he comes out and tells me that the deer had broke off it’s left antler just above the brow tine, so he let him walk. So, since our morning was pretty slow, I told him that at 10:30 we would pull out and head his way. After telling Hunter what Tristan had seen we settled back in for the last half hour. At 10:17 I look out the front window and low and behold there’s a buck feeding right in front of us. After getting Hunter’s attention, he looks out and sees him, so I asked him if he wanted to shoot it. I got a pretty quick reply “YES!!!”. He shouldered up the gun and was waiting on him to turn broadside. Finally after what seemed like forever, the deer turns offering Hunter his shot. I tell him to squeeeeeeeze it off nice and slow, and he whispers back, “Dad, I can’t see. Everything is all fuzzy”. Well noticing that he was breathing as if he just ran a 5 mile marathon, I looked around at the scope lens and seen that it was completely steamed over. I reached around and wiped it clear and all was good. He settled back on the deer and let that smokepole bark. We sat and listened to him crash just over the hill about 25 yards away. After a few minutes we packed up and headed over to find his deer. As you can see from the pictures, he was one happy hunter. I couldn’t be more proud of him either. He beat the cold, a half mile walk in the dark, and sitting for over 4 hours, and never complained one time. Needless to say, once again I’m one VERY proud father!!!!!
