Tagged out on the KING

Post  TheCReW on Fri Nov 30, 2012 6:49 am

Finally cut my tag yesterday right at noon. It started in July when we were taking a bear stand down and ran into a big velvet buck who we named KING because his thick antlers looked like a crown.

When we got home I checked out some maps and photography and found a few spots I thought looked good so hung a bunch of cameras in his area. The next 3 months was nothing but frustration as every time I check the cams he was not there. We moved them onto scrapes, trails, and an early mineral site and then setup some food too and still nothing. In early November we tried to get into the area and there was a big mudhole that we buried the truck in for half a day. Being stuck in a foot of water under 2" of ice is not fun, lol. So we ended up abandoning 3 of our cams as they were a good 10 mile walk in. We could still access the other side with a short half mile walk. I checked them about once a week but had little hope of the king showing up, especially after elk moved in and dominated the area. A week or so ago, we decided to walk in there and see if we were getting any action, and I was pumped to see the KING in there and some daytime movement.
A few good pictures of him showed he was a mature buck for sure, his body size looked twice as big as the other deer.

This picture got me fired up as it shows his huge chest and sagging neck from years of bulking up and slimming down and a real shaggy coat compared to other deer.

So I hiked in and sat a half dozen times, a few time all day long but the KING never showed. So yesterday morning Lindsay and I were sitting for a big 6 x 6 she has he eye on and the wind started changing directions so we had to abandon the sit. The wind was good for the KING so we headed to his area. As we were hiking in to the blind, we saw deer ahead of us. The same thing happened a few days prior and I ended up getting a glimpse of the KING but I think he got spooked and never came out. So this time we just hunkered down right where we were. We were on the top of a bald hill with a blizzard around us and werent dressed to sit there as we were planning to crawl into the blind but we decided to sit it out as long as possible. After a half hour or so a spiker and fawn came out and we were disappointed thinking that was what we had seen. After a while they disappeared and as the wind blew through us all of a sudden Lindsay kind of gasped and said 'its him'! She had spotted him coming through the trees. Finally, his antlers entered the shooting lane but then he stopped and he stayed there for honestly 20 minutes while I began to shake badly. He did not look our way once thank goodness, and took the one step he needed to in order to expose his shoulder. My shot was good and he only went 50 yards in the snow.
I am very happy with him and worked very hard to get him, so I am proud of him and will enjoy seeing him on the wall reminding me of the good times we had in the outdoors this past summer and fall.

Thanks for letting me share and good luck to all those still out there!

Something about those Canadian whitetails that just makes them more appealing then ours. Be it thier body size or the coloration of their headgear, mixed with the colors of your neck of the woods they are truly a beautiful animal! Love the write up and the pics man, congrats on tagging a stud!
